The history of Gredelj is closely connected to the history of railway transport in this region.

Our story began back in 1894 when the rolling stock factory Gredelj was founded as the main workshop of the Hungarian state railways for repair and general overhaul of steam locomotives. By recognizing the market needs, soon after being established the factory spread its activities to manufacturing of parts and tools necessary for maintaining the railway vehicles.

The experience gained through long lasting maintenance of railway vehicles was a starting point for manufacturing of new vehicles. Subsequently, in 1954 there was constructed a new mail van and there was launched production of motor trains for narrow gauge rail, structure of which was of aluminum. Already in 1963 there was constructed the world's first aluminum train for standard gauge rail.

To this very day, Gredelj has continuously been expanding its activities in the field of designing and manufacturing of new railway vehicles, as well as in reconstruction and modernization of all types of railway vehicles.

By expanding its services, there were built new manufacturing capacities, personnel potential was continuously taken care of, and gained experience is being passed on from generation to generation.

Moving of the locomotive plant to a new location in 1967 indicated the first phase of Gredelj's removal from downtown. Since that time Gredelj was doing business on two locations until 2010 when its entire manufacturing capacities were united in one place.

With new manufacturing plants equipped with the most sophisticated technology, at a location of 352.000m² total surface, with 80.000 m² of covered area and 10000 m of tracks, Gredelj is trying to increase competitiveness on the market and reach the leading position in designing, manufacturing, modernization and maintenance of all types of rolling stock in the region.

The company received the ISO 9001 certificate at the end of 2000 and since 2005 it has owned the Environment Management System certificate according to ISO 14001.

Today Gredelj is proud of the fact that its locomotives, coaches and multiple units were designed in accordance with UIC and AAR standards, and are capable of running on all track gauges (narrow, wide or standard). Today, they pull trains and transport passengers and goods all over the world, from Argentina over Guinea to Saudi Arabia.
